This church was designed by the famous architect John Semple (1801–1882). Semple shares the same name as his father who was also an architect and both worked for the Board of First Fruits. He also designed The Black Church, The White Church, Monkstown Church of Ireland, St Maelruan’s in Tallaght and also the Round Room in the Mansion House. Semple’s ‘late English gothic’ style of architecture is now regarded as being way ahead of it’s time.
