This bar dates from 900 ad and is not only the oldest bar in Ireland, but also in Europe and possibly the World. This was officially certified by The Guinness Book of World Records using archeological evidence taken from the the wattle and daub walls. The bar is located beside the banks of the Shannon River (which was an ancient crossing point) and the 12th century Athlone Norman castle. The bar was originally known as ‘Luain’s Inn’ and has uneven saw dust floors, ceiling supports, cozy snugs and a pitted fire place to keep people happily drinking and socializing for another 1000 years.
