The Abbey Tavern nestles against the ancient ruins of Howth Abbey, which dates back to the 11th century. The Tavern itself dates back to the 15th Century, when it was built for the local monks as a seminary. An old 12th century chapter house is located next door so this may therefore be one of the oldest pubs in Ireland. Facing the tavern is the Howth Martello Tower which were built as look-outs at the start of the 1800’s to prevent a possible French invasion.
