Sligo translates from the Irish word ‘Sligeach’ meaning ‘Shelly Place’. This refers to the abundance of shellfish found in the Garavogue river estuary. Sligo is one of the most picturesque counties in Ireland nestled between wild Atlantic beaches and the dramatic Ox, Belbulben and Knocknarea mountains. This area has the highest concentrations of ancient monuments in Ireland. It also has the oldest and largest Neolithic cemetery in Europe (Carrowmore) which has been short-listed for UNESCO World Heritage site status. Its highest peak is Truskmore Mountain at 647m located in the Dartry Mountain Range.
