Awesome surf location & site of a Royal tragedy

Classiebawn Castle is located on one of the most dramatic peninsulas in Ireland that is world famous for its big surf. This area was originally owned by the O’Connors of Sligo who lost these lands when The Crown confiscated them and granted them to Sir John Temple, 1st Lord Palmerston for their part in a rebellion. The castle was commissioned in 1860 for 3rd Viscount Palmerston, statesman and twice Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. The Baronial castle was built with brown-yellow sandstone brought in by boat from Donegal. In 1939, the castle was inherited by Lord Mountbatten of Burma, the last Viceroy of India and great-uncle to King Charles of England. Mountbatten lived here until his tragic death when his boat was blown up in the bay in 1979 by the IRA. Legend has it that his ghost is still roaming the halls of the castle, unable to find peace as a result of his violent and sudden death.
