Round Towers

Round Towers were built between 800 to 1100 AD. They are tall slender towers with a cone like top. They were built within the grounds of a monastery and they usually contained a bell that was used for calling the congregation to prayer or to warn of attacks. They normally had 5 wooden levels linked together by a ladder. The small windows at the top always point north, south, east & west and their entrance doors were about 10 feet above the ground. Only 3 exist outside Ireland.
