Ireland’s most elegant round tower

The Ardmore Round tower is located on the south coast of Ireland in the pretty fishing village of Ardmore. The tower dates from between the 10th and 12th centuries and has the unique feature of having 3 string courses that wind up the tower and give it a needle-like appearance. The site reputedly contains the grave of St. Declan who reputedly founded Ireland’s first monastic site in the 5th century. The old Cathedral nearby has 2 ogham stones and interesting carvings of human heads, animal heads, and scenes from the Bible. This beautiful site still attracts pilgrims on Declan’s Feast Day, July 24th.
