The name ‘Waterford’ comes from Old Norse Veðrafjǫrðr, meaning ‘ram (wether) fjord’. Waterford City was founded by the Vikings in 914 AD and is Ireland’s oldest. It contains Ireland’s oldest civic building, Reginald’s Tower and many fine museums including one for its famous crystal. Highlights include The Copper Coast, Ardmore, The Cycling Greenway and its dolmens. It’s highest point is Knockmealdown Mountain standing at 792m.
