Court & Wedge Tombs

The court cairn is one of the 4 types of megalithic tomb found in Ireland. They date to 3900BC–3500BC and more than 390 have been recorded. Most examples have a single courtyard connected to a single burial tomb chamber and most of them are found in the northern third of the island. Wedge tombs date to 3000BC-2500BC and are the youngest of the megalithic tombs. They have large stone boxes, and a sloping roof slab – similar in appearance to portal dolmens and would have originally been covered with a cairn of stones. 400 have been recorded in Ireland and quite often they are found close to other older monuments.
