An accessible wedge tomb on The Beara

The Beara Peninsula has some of the most rugged, wildest, and most beautiful landscapes in the country. It also has a wealth of prehistoric sites including stone circles, megalithic tombs, and standing stones. The Killaugh Wedge Tomb can be found at Killaugh near the road to the Dursey cable car and is regarded as one of the finest examples. Wedge tombs typically date to around 2,500 – 2,000 BC and typically have large stone boxes, a sloping roof slab and can appear somewhat similar to portal dolmens. It would have originally been covered with a cairn of stones. These are the most recent and most numerous of Ireland’s megalithic tombs with more than 500 being recorded.
