Dolmens

Dolmens are the oldest and most recognizable type of Irish megalithic monument some of which date back to 4200 BC. About 200 of them have been recorded and their key features are a ‘portal’ or doorway with a single chamber which is then closed by a blocking stone. Some still have their capstones which can unbelievably weigh up to 100 tonnes. These are often inclined at an angle with the highest portion over the entrance. Many would have been covered or surrounded by cairns of stones. They are considered to be otherworldly structures or believed to be the graves of giants or great fallen warriors.
