The largest & one of the most mysterious ancient monuments in Ireland

The Giant’s Ring can be found just a few miles south of Belfast City center close to Shaw’s Bridge and dates to 2700BC. The enclosure is over 200 meters across, 4 meters high, and has panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. At its center is a dolmen which is a type of chambered grave that originally would have been covered by a large cairn of stones and earth. There is very little evidence of what exactly it was used for but it must have been an important place as it would have taken a considerable effort for a community to build it during the neolithic period.  The site has been used for many purposes over the millennia including rituals, gatherings, burials, and inaugurations. More ‘recently’ it was used as a horse racing track in the 1700s. It is now used as a public park but its original scale cannot fail to impress.
