Avondale House is located near the village of Rathdrum in county Wicklow. This was the birthplace and home of Charles Stewart Parnell (1846 -1891) one of the greatest political leaders in Irish history. The house was originally built for Samuel Hayes in 1777 but when he died in 1795 the house passed to the Parnell family. It was designed by the famous English architect James Wyatt who also designed the Partheon in London, the Royal Academy in Sandhurst and many buildings in Oxford University. The house is set in over 500 acres of beautiful parkland and still has much of it’s original furniture and plasterwork. There is also a room called ‘The American Room’ which is dedicated to Parnell’s American grandfather, Admiral Charles Stewart (1778-1869) who commanded the USS Constitution during the War of 1812. This famous boat is now moored in Boston Harbour.
