Abbeys

An abbey is a type of monastery that was used by members of a religious order under the governance of an abbot or abbess. They provided housing for both monks and nuns in a complex of buildings designed for work and religious activities. There are about 120 genuine abbeys in Ireland. and they date from between 1041 and 1550. Cistercian abbeys are regarded to have some of the most beautiful architecture in Europe.
