Unique stone-sculptured figures

The Boa Island figures are mysterious stone carvings that date between the late Iron Age and the early Christian period. The taller one has been described as a Janus figure as it has 2 faces reminding people of the Roman deity Janus. It however may also be a representation of a Celtic deity Badhbha. The smaller figure is known as “The Lustyman” because it was found on the nearby island of Lusty More. Their faces are oval in shape and have big eyes, straight noses, and half-open mouths with protruding tongues above the pointed chins. A stone beside the Janus figure has a deeply carved indentation and its purpose is unknown but tourists often place small mementos in it for good luck. There are 2 stone other figures in Ireland that are similar and may be related. One is known as Tandragee Man in Armagh Cathedral and the other is a figure located beside the Carndonagh High Cross in Donegal.
