One of Ireland’s most loved-up Dolmens

Proleek Dolmen is located on the legendary Cooley Peninsula and is the most visited dolmen in the north of Ireland. This portal tomb dates to 2500-3000BC and the 2 upright stones (or portals) are believed to be a gateway to the next world. Many of these were originally covered by thousands of smaller stones in the shape of a tall pointed cairn but over the years most of the stones were removed or collapsed. The giant ‘roof stone’ on this example measures 12 X 10 feet and is estimated to weigh over 30 tons. If you look closely at the photo you will see lots of tiny pebbles on the top of the capstone as a local legend says..”if you throw a stone and it doesn’t roll off, you will be married within a year”!
