Regarded as Ireland’s finest High Cross

Muiredach’s High Cross stands 18 feet tall and is so named because of an inscription on its base that reads ‘a prayer for Muiredach by whom this cross was made’. Little else is known of him however but he was probably a local chieftain. The cross is richly carved with scenes from the New Testament and the figures on the shaft are noticeably larger than those on the top. It is regarded as one of Ireland’s finest examples and its greatest contribution to European sculpture. If you look carefully at the top of the cross you will also see a carving of an early Christian church whose design dates from the 9th or 10th century AD.
