Ireland’s tallest dolmen
This Kilmogue Dolmen is locally known as ‘Leac an Scail’ meaning the ‘The Stone of the Warrior’. It was constructed between c.3000BC & 4000 BC and would have been originally been covered with earth or stones. Its capstone has been estimated to weigh over 80 tonnes and stands 18 feet high making it the tallest in Ireland. The name ‘Kilmogue’ derives from ‘The Church of Mog’ which refers to a Celtic deity named Mog Ruith. Mog was worshiped in Roman Britain, Gaul, and Ireland and had special powers to conjure up storms and take to flight. Beside the tomb is a standing stone and a babbling brook to add to the ambiance of this special place.
