Burial Site of Arthur Guinness
The tiny cemetery of Oughterard is located near the Lyons Estate on a small hill surrounded by verdant countryside. In the 1700s, this was once on the main road from Dublin to Cork. The site dates back to the 6th century and contains a 10th-century round tower, a 14th-century church, and a 17th-century castle. It also contains the grave of one of Arthur Guinness and has become a Mecca for discerning tourists. It is believed that Arthur’s grandfather, William Read, a farmer by trade set up a roadside stand near here to sell his homebrew to soldiers during the Jacobite wars of 1690. From such inauspicious beginnings, a legend was born.
